Who's gonna be the one to knock Diddy off his top spot?

Diddy is world’s richest rapper
By Jonah Bayer • Mar 11, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Breaking News

If you need to borrow some money, we suggest asking Diddy. Forbes Magazine just released their latest list of the wealthiest hip-hop stars and Diddy claimed the Number One slot with a net worth of $475 million. Yes, you read that right, Diddy is reportedly worth almost half a billion dollars.

How did Forbes determine this? Well, Diddy has stake in Bad Boy Records and Sean John clothing as well as a portion of Ciroc Vodka. Jay-Z is right behind him with a net worth of $450 million; Hova sold his stake in Rocawear clothing in 2007 for $204 million and three years ago he signed a ten-year $150 million deal with Live Nation. Oh, and Jay also owns part of the New Jersey Nets and a line of nightclubs.

Who else made the cut? Dr. Dre came in at $125 million while Birdman and 50 Cent are determined to be worth $100 million each. You may remember that back in 2007 50 Cent sold his stake in Vitaminwater to Coca-Cola for a reported $400 million but that amount was never actually made public; plus, we’re guessing that dude has bought a lot of bling over the past four years.

Kanye West Early Beats CD Emerges

Kanye West fans are more than familiar with the tracks he produced for his "big brother" Jay-Z on the famed album, 'The Blueprint,' released in 2001. Recently, more of the Chi-town producer-turned-rapper's original beats, from that same year, have emerged.

'Ye's always been keen on sampling, noted on Jigga's ode to his nickname 'Izzo (H.O.V.A.),' where West took the Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back' and crafted it into the memorable record heard by legions of rap fans. On the beat CD, discovered in a storage bin by Jensen Karp -- better known as former Interscope Records rapper Hot Karl -- 26 tracks are featured, showcasing Kanye's signature style, heard noticeably on albums like that of Jay-Z.

Locally based FM hip-hop has a home at WGBZ-The Beat

A new radio station has come to the Anniston area, tailored especially for residents who crave the hip-hop lyrics, R&B sound and rapping beat of musical superstars like Niki Minaj, Aretha Franklin and Eminem.

Called WGBZ-The Beat, the radio station is the area’s first locally broadcast hip-hop program in stereo.

“Basically, our goal is to make radio fun and exciting,” said Justin Simane, WGBZ-The Beat’s programming director. “People don’t want to listen the same-old, same-old. And until now, the area never had a hip-hop, R&B FM radio station.”

Music programming for WGBZ-The Beat debuted Sunday night on 104.3 FM, 99.1 FM and 1430 AM.

After surviving a near-fatal car crash last January, Jim Jones sat down with SOHH to discuss the aftermath and what impact the accident has had on his life moving forward.

Coincidentally, Jones said he maintains a warp-speed lifestyle despite almost meeting his ultimate demise.

"Um, that's a funny thing, man," Jones told SOHH when asked if his life perspective has changed since the near-fatal car crash. "When sh*t like that happens, immediately off top you re-evaluate a lot of things that's going on and sh*t like that. And then for some reason, I found myself doing a 120 [miles per hour] on the highway the other day. It's the fast life, let's go." (SOHH)

Following the January 17th crash, photos from the site hit the Internet.

I woke up today to a very scary email and photo from the homie Jim Jones....his passenger van was totaled in this car accident this morning. Thankfully, he also included this message, "Just walked away from this [crash]. God bless us." Just looking at this gives me anxiety remembering recent accidents that were much more tragic. So I'm thankful Jim is okay, and these kinds of messages always remind me to tell people I care about them. Also....please drive safely. No drinking. No sleepiness. No texting (that's my new year's resolution). And always seatbelts. Sorry for the den-mother post. (Miss Info TV)

Additional reporting claimed the wreck occurred in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dipset capo, Jim Jones, was reportedly involved in a serious car accident early Monday (January 17) in Atlanta, which resulted in his vehicle being totaled. It appears the accident took place on a freeway. (Baller Status)

In late January, Jones released a song called "Crash" reflecting on what took place.

"After they finished searching the van for drugs/The officer told me, if I don't believe in God, now is the time to start/I was halfway asleep, faded off the sour/Not knowing that could have been my last hour/I seen it clear, we was on 85/Road looking clear, doing 'bout 85/A smooth sail turned into a crazy ride/I wish I could say a n*gga watched the way he drive/But he was just trying to swerve a deer/I didn't get to see him but the Lord heard my prayers/Head-on collision with the car rail/And I'm a firm believer that God's real/I felt my van crushed against the hard steel/At that point, I can't tell y'all how my heart feel/I seen it happen, we were spinning like a bottle top/And I was praying, 'Lord, please make the bottle stop.' ..." ("Crash")

B.o.B. Drops 'No Future,' Odd Future Diss Track

Not everyone is an Odd Future fan. Rapper B.o.B. released a diss track Friday morning (Mar. 25) taking aim at the Los Angeles rap collective, on which the Atlanta rapper seethes, "Keep f**kin' with me you ain't gon have no future."

B.o.B - "No Future" (Odd Future Diss) by One Thirty BPM

B.o.B, "No Future"

"No Future" is likely a response to a line in Odd Future member Tyler, the Creator's song "Yonkers," which references "Airplanes," B.o.B.'s hit single with Haley Williams, and his regular collaborator Bruno Mars. "I'll crash that f**kin' airplane that that f****t n***a Bob is in/And stab Bruno Mars in his g****n esophagus/And won't stop until the cops come in," Tyler raps on the track.

Last Poets, African American legends and precursor of modern hip hop, struggling amid budget cuts

The Last Poets - a group of poets and musicians formed in the late 1960s whose black nationalist raps are widely credited with being the precursors of modern hip hop - is alive, but not so well off.

Cutbacks in arts education programs in the city schools, which were a large part of his income, have put Oyewole, 63, in such dire financial straits that he is in danger of losing the Morningside Drive apartment where he has lived in for 35 years.

Bill Cosby Still the Same O'G

ONE OF THE FUNNIEST CATS IN THE INDUSTRY STILL AT IT AT 73 YEARS OLD

Bill Cosby's calm, home-spun delivery on the phone is the same carefully crafted style of storytelling fans see when he performs live.

The beloved 73-year-old comedian, actor and author with the ability to be funny without resorting to profanity will play the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City, Iowa, on Sunday.

During a recent phone interview, Cosby thought a while before answering whether he has changed the way he writes material for his generations of fans.

Don't rush an answer from this entertainment icon, or it could ruin a good story. When the pause seems too long and rephrasing of the question begins, he mock-snaps, "Give me a minute!"

Silence finally is broken with a breath and then two words from Cosby: "I'm 23." But then it's quiet for a while longer.

"I'm 23 and in remedial English," he continues, then stops again, perhaps building a mental image for himself and the listener.

"I'm a freshman at Temple University after putting in four years in the Navy starting at age 19, and I am the most excited freshman ever," he says.

Cosby's answer picks up steam as he tells how the professor instructed the class to write about the first time they did something, how he pored over the writing assignment (pulling his first tooth as a youngster) and how a week later, the professor scolded everyone in class for doing a lousy job.

Then to Cosby's shock, the teacher said one student did well, then read Cosby's composition outloud.

"I'm happily stunned and almost confused because I had never done this," he recalls. "And here this professor is reading my paper to the class as an example of how to think, how to do, and of course that opened a door for me."

Through that class, Cosby says he discovered that he could entertain people with his style.

During college when he was working as a bartender at the Cellar Bar in Philadelphia, an English couple got to know him, thought he told funny stories and got him a stand-up job at a club in Greenwich Village. His career expanded, and soon he was playing bigger venues and landed a spot on TV's famous variety program "The Ed Sullivan Show."

Eminem's using his road to recovery to help others

Yelawolf Recalls Meeting Eminem For The First Time
Shady Records rapper also tells MTV News' 'RapFix Live' that Em got him to curb his drinking.

By Jayson Rodriguez (@jayhovawitness) , with reporting by Sway Calloway (@realsway)

When Yelawolf first met his new boss, Eminem, the meeting couldn't have been more casual.

"He said, 'What's up? I'm Marshall,' " Yelawolf recalled to MTV News on Thursday's (March 10) "RapFix Live."

The meeting obviously went well: Yela is the latest recruit to Em's Shady Records empire, along with Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz and Royce Da 5'9".)

Yela and Em talked in Detroit after producer Jim Jonsin and Eminem's manager urged the rapper to listen to the upstart's music. They shared similarities in their upbringing, and the partnership paid off immediately when the Grammy-winning superstar bestowed the young lyricist with advice, according to Yela.

"I'm a drinker; I drink a lot," he explained. "My management was concerned about some advice he could give me about slowing down so I don't get caught up in that life. He told me if it gets to the point where you need a drink before you go onstage, like you require that to function, is when you need to check yourself. And honestly, that's where I was at that point. And I've changed. I don't drink before I perform anymore."

The Alabama rapper will stick knock back a beer, but he's given up overdoing it before shows. Now, he says, he's enjoying himself more and his confidence has grown.

And that courage helped when he first played Eminem his debut album.

"I'm super excited about the music and fully confident that it's jamming," he said. "I was a little nervous, but after we broke the ice and really chopped it up, he seemed excited about it. So that makes me twice as excited now."

Virtual respects: More families choose to have funerals Webcast

More and more funeral homes across the country and in metro Detroit are realizing that family and friends can't always travel to pay their respects and are offering Webcasts.

All that is needed to go live is software, a video camera, a computer and a tripod.

"This is a great service we're able to offer people, and the feedback we've received has been fabulous," said David Techner, funeral director at Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield, which began its free Webcast option in November.

By tradition, Jewish funerals must be quickly arranged to take place within 48 hours of death. Techner said the majority of families choose to use the Webcast.

Russell Simmons: Bill Cosby Told Me To “Get The F Out” His Face

New York — Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons wrote yesterday that Bill Cosby snubbed his attempts to apologize for past comments; shoulder bumping Simmons and telling him to “Get the f*** out my face,” at the Jackie Robinson Annual Awards Dinner in New York.

“I wanted to find him to apologize, to tell him I was sorry about my statements and to tell him that I loved him,” Simmons explained. “Suddenly, I turned and he was behind the curtain and I said, ‘I love you,’ and he responded on some real hip-hop, ‘Get the f*** out my face!’ ”

Nate Dogg’s Cause of Death Explained

The legendary hip-hop singer’s lawyer says Nate passed due to complications from multiple strokes…

News quickly spread today (March 16) that iconic hip-hop singer Nate Dogg, 41, had passed on Tuesday morning, but early reports where not certain of the cause of the West Coast artist’s death. The Associated Press spoke to his attorney, who revealed the reasoning behind the premature demise of the rap crooner, born Nathaniel D. Hale.

According to his lawyer, Mark Geragos, Nate had succumbed to complications stemming from multiple strokes that he suffered from in 2007 and 2008.

Manager and friend, Rod McGrew, told TMZ that despite Hale’s ongoing health problems, he was making strides in his recovery and his death was unexpected.

Nate, who had recorded an abundance of chart topping singles with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Tupac, Eminem, Warren G and Ludacris, among others, was memorialized by the hip-hop nation on Twitter. “We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb,” longtime collaborator Snoop Dogg wrote on his account. “One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986 when I was a sophomore at poly high where we met,” Snoop Dogg tweeted Tuesday night.

“We appreciate the enormous outpouring of response from all over the world,” McGrew said in a statement. We greatly appreciate that and thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

As of press time, plans for Nate Dogg’s funeral service are unknown.
