Virtual respects: More families choose to have funerals Webcast


More and more funeral homes across the country and in metro Detroit are realizing that family and friends can't always travel to pay their respects and are offering Webcasts.

All that is needed to go live is software, a video camera, a computer and a tripod.

"This is a great service we're able to offer people, and the feedback we've received has been fabulous," said David Techner, funeral director at Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield, which began its free Webcast option in November.

By tradition, Jewish funerals must be quickly arranged to take place within 48 hours of death. Techner said the majority of families choose to use the Webcast.
