Last Poets, African American legends and precursor of modern hip hop, struggling amid budget cuts


The Last Poets - a group of poets and musicians formed in the late 1960s whose black nationalist raps are widely credited with being the precursors of modern hip hop - is alive, but not so well off.

Cutbacks in arts education programs in the city schools, which were a large part of his income, have put Oyewole, 63, in such dire financial straits that he is in danger of losing the Morningside Drive apartment where he has lived in for 35 years.
